What is Thyroid

The thyroid is a small butterfly shaped and is located in the front of the neck below the voice box at the spot where a bow tie would rest. This gland produces a hormone that travel through the bloodstream to body’s cells. This hormone helps regulate growth, metabolism, structure of bones and energy levels and performs many other important functions. To do this, thyroid needs iodine, a chemical element, that the body absorbs from food and water.

What is Thyroid Disease

When the thyroid gland fails to supply the adequate amount of hormones needed by the body, thyroid disease occurs. If it is overactive, it releases too much thyroid hormone into the bloodstream, resulting in hyperthyroidism and if it is under-active, it results in hypothyroidism.
